Have you ever wanted to get into board games but didn't feel confident navigating all the rules? This summer, try out a whole new experience. Gamut Academy has a solid collection of board games with varying levels of complexity. Check out the menu below to consider how you'll start a new hobby (or further an old one)!

From ancient chess to modern games like Star Realms, there's sure to be a game that will resonate with your heart.

Mild, Medium, or Mega

Before we get to the actual list, though, consider how intense of a board game you want to learn to play.

There are mild games like Azul, which are practically ice breakers. These are the sorts of games where the rules are few, the strategy isn't particularly important, and the competition is all but absent.

Then, there are medium games like Carcassonne. These are the sorts of games that have a bunch of rules—but not too many. They make you think. Strategy plays a big part, but there's enough randomization to keep things relatively even without any stress.

Lastly, there are mega games like Castles of Mad King Ludwig. These are the sorts of games where you have to keep track of lots of details to win, not to mention revisit the instructions to make sure you're not breaking the rules. While that might sound daunting, there's something especially satisfying about learning complex things and stretching your intellect.

There are plenty of other games with even more levels of complexity, but this range will probably serve as the best chance for a satisfying introduction to some new games.

Which title caught your attention? They're all wonderful adventures! Because of the differences between their complexities, however, they have been sorted into the three categories. Session durations and costs are based on the categories.

The durations Include learning the game and playing at least one round. Dungeons & Dragons is the only exception; see below for more details.

1. Chess is an ancient game and is probably the most popular game to date. Furthermore, It is likely the most competitive board game in the history of board games. Gamut Academy does not presume to make you ready for competition with ranked chess players. However, Gamut Academy will help you develop confidence about the core rules and some introductory strategies so that you can play in informal settings with a reasonable measure of success.

2. Poker is perhaps second only to chess in the length of its history and its level of competition. Gamut Academy does not presume to make you ready for competition with ranked poker players, nor do we recommend playing for real money. However, Gamut Academy will help you develop confidence about the relationships between the different poker hands and a few techniques that will enable you to feel confident when playing with friends.

3. Dungeons & Dragons is not as ancient as chess or poker, but it is perhaps the most widespread tabletop game. Furthermore, D&D (as it is usually abbreviated) can vary immensely from campaign to campaign, which tend to span many multiple-hour sessions. Gamut Academy cannot run a full-length campaign but will help you create your own customized character and introduce you to some of the foundational elements of playing, including navigating the unique rules and a relaxed introduction to role-playing.

4. Die Sternenfahrer von Catan is an old collecter's item from Germany. While most of the game is based on dice rolls and visual markers, much of it is in German. Gamut Academy can translate, but just be aware of this fact if you consider sampling this lovely game.
